Flowers and Fiddles is a small place on the corner only a few blocks down from my house. We honestly could have walked, that’s how close it is. I pass by it every day on my way to drop Delilah off at school, but I’d never noticed it before. Probably because it doesn’t look like a bar, but instead like a cozy little shack. Like an old corner store or something.

Tonight, though? It’s lit up like the Fourth of July, stuffed full of happy people drinking, dancing, and chatting. And that’s only what I can see on the outside patio.

Jack pulls into the parking lot and snags a spot someone just pulled out of, all the way towards the back. We get out, and as I stand, I really feel the alcohol and smile to myself, walking around the car to meet Jack.

“You ever been to a gay bar before?” he asks.

“Nope,” I say with a shake of my head

“So many firsts…” he says, a smirk on those tempting, full lips of his. The lips I want to kiss so badly. The lips I haven’t stopped thinking about since we shared a kiss last night. “Come on.” He holds out his hand and I take it, noticing how perfectly it fits in mine. He leads me around the front of the building, and we walk up the pathway that is clear of people but has a dark, wooden fence of sorts on either side, which is where all the people are.

Inside, the place is crowded, full of people, and loud. Music is bumping from a DJ in the back corner, who would look entirely out of place in a bar like this, if it weren’t for his representing the rainbow everywhere, something that is clear throughout the entire establishment. Rainbow hearts hang on the walls, along with photos of couples and what looks like a Pride ceremony.

With a tug on my hand, Jack pulls me to the bar. We scoot in between a few people who are lingering about, chatting with others.

“Jack!” the bartender, a tall, thin, and decent-looking man shouts, leaning over the bar to kiss him on the cheek. “Haven’t seen you in here in a while.”

“Been busy,” Jack replies. He jerks his head towards me. “This is Andy.”

“Well, hello, Andy.”

I wave with my free hand. “Hiya,” I reply.

“What can I get for you two tonight?”

Jack looks to me. “Up to trying something else new?”

I shrug. “Why not?”

Jack turns back to the bartender, giving him our order but I don’t catch it over the change in music. I have the sudden urge to dance, something I never ever do.

Everything that this bar is, is everything I’ve avoided for years. I’ve forced myself to live a low-key life to fit in with the people around me, and loud bars were not one of those things.

I watch everyone dancing and having a good time as we wait for our drinks, Jack making small chat with someone else at the bar. I only just now notice that he’s let go of my hand and I’m entirely okay with it.
